(2010/06/09) Required Scales, Ranges, and Patterns

(2010/06/09) STRINGS: Scales are to be performed from memory, played with separate bows, quarter note = 88-92, start and stop on the tonic, no ornamentation, and no repetition of the tonic between octaves. Students will self-select the first scale and judges will assign the second. Scales include major and relative minor up to to four flats and sharps. VLN and CEL scale range is three octaves. VLA range is 3 octaves for C, D, Eb, E, F, and G major, and c, c#, d, e, f, f#, and g minor. (The scales that would start on the G-string will not be required for viola auditions.) STB range is one octave for C, D, Eb, and two octaves otherwise.


WINDS: Scales are to be performed from memory. Two major scales will be selected by the adjudicators from among the following: Ab, Eb, Bb, F, C, G, D, A, E, and played in the pattern shown below. Range is two octaves when within the range of the instrument as shown below. Instruments that have three octaves within the range should play the upper two octaves, except for Bass Clarinet. The chromatic scale is to be played over the entire range of the instrument as shown below, with steady tongued marcato eighth notes ascending and descending, at a tempo of quarter note equals 120.
